What's this all about?

Are there places you long to return to?

Others you'd like to forget?

Do you feel drawn to a place you've never visited?

If you've ever been curious about the meaning places hold  for you, consider joining us for Geography of the Heart. This six session retreat explores how we connect to space and how we make meaning of it. We'll consider  the places that attract us and those that don't. We'll reflect on how physical landscapes and locations relate to the interior landscapes of our hearts.

We’ll be guided by these essential questions:

  • How do places speak to us?
  • What can we learn about ourselves and each other from the places that are significant to us?
  • What does it mean to feel out of place?
  • How can we find our place?

Images, texts, music, and poetry will offer inspiration for exploring a range of archetypal places and spaces. There will be time for personal reflection, and small and whole group conversation. We'll follow simple gentle guidelines to create a welcoming, caring and trustworthy space. We'll use Zoom as our classroom.

A retreat about place?

The feeling is as clear now as it was 45 years ago.

I am standing at the edge of Dal Lake gazing across its still waters to the mountains on the other side.

And I am overcome with grief.

Grief at having to leave this place.

This place that should have seemed so foreign to me, had somehow captured me.

It was not the people, the climate, even the experiences I had there - it was the place itself. In a handful of days, Dal Lake had settled into my heart and bones and claimed me.

I would spend the next several months obsessed with finding a way to return.

And the next many, many years seeking to understand the profound impact this and many other places have had on me.

And how geography has shaped me.

Over the last few years, we've attended and facilitated many retreats. Retreats where we pause, reflect, and listen with care and respect to each other are the ones that bring gentle and lasting transformation. As Courage & Renewal® Facilitators we've experienced how we can inspire each other and listen to and trust our own inner wisdom.

Exploring place together offers us an opportunity to understand our life journey and navigate the terrain ahead with intention and grace.

We hope you'll join us.
